HBCUvc’s History
We were founded in 2017 with a core mission of increasing access to capital by building a new generation of investors from communities where future Black leaders are well-represented. Our flagship program is a venture capital (VC) fellowship and paid internship for students and recent alumni of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The program creates awareness of venture capital as an industry by teaching fundamental VC topics through a culturally-aware lens and provides career onramps to the industry through a paid internship program with VC partners.
In August 2021, we worked with investors and entrepreneurs Chris & Crystal Sacca in identifying 20 HBCUs to allocate $2M ($100k each HBCU) in their latest fund, Lowercarbon Capital. $2M was distributed to the 20 HBCUs as equity ownership in the fund. All returns from those fund positions will go to grow HBCU endowments.
Today, HBCUvc operates four programs, including a learning fund managed by program participants that awards non-dilutive capital to Black entrepreneurs. Our work has impacted 340 program participants. The institutions where our alumni work now represent $4B in assets under management (AUM). By mobilizing the next generation of innovators, investors, and institutions, our impact has and continues to have a positive ripple effect on Black communities and their wealth, with our alumni serving as new access points to capital.
