Investing Forward: Perspectives & Strategies on Race, Equity, and Belonging in VC

Join us in a unique small-group training designed for venture capitalists looking to further their understanding of racial equity and its impacts on venture capital and vice-versa. "Investing Forward" offers a unique opportunity for open and challenging conversations about race, equity, and belonging in venture capital in a safe space. Through guided discussions, listening sessions, and workshops, this event will help you navigate the complex landscape of racial equity and provide practical insights to assist you on your journey to becoming a better investor and contributing to a more inclusive venture capital industry.

Event Overview:

  • Date: June 21, 2024, 8a - 3p PT

  • Tuition: $1500 (All proceeds support operational costs for our student-based programming)

  • Group Size: Limited to a maximum of 15 active investors

  • Location: Palo Alto, CA (Exact location confirmed after registration)

  • Participant Criteria: This program is designed for active investors who have started or are curious to start a personal learning journey about racial equity and its relationship to venture capital.

  • Confidentiality: To facilitate open and challenging conversations, the identity of participates will not be public. We ask all participants and speakers to keep the identities of other participants and items discussed private.

  • Payment: After your registration has been approved, you will receive an invoice for $1500. We ask that you pay the invoice within 48 hours to reserve your seat.

What You Will Experience:

  1. Historical Context and Current Landscape: Engage in conversations about the historical reasons behind current inequalities in venture capital funding. Hear from our legal partner on the future impacts of the recent Fearless Fund lawsuit. Gain insights into the broader political and social climate affecting diversity and inclusion efforts in venture capital.

  2. Building a team of the future: Discuss effective strategies for identifying and attracting talent within your firm and portfolio companies that reflect the changing demographics of the United States. Share experiences and develop ideas to create a culture of belonging in your organization.

  3. Conscious Funding Approaches: Explore best practices for identifying, evaluating and funding underrepresented entrepreneurs. Engage in discussions about tools and frameworks to reduce bias in investment decisions and create a portfolio with forward-representation.

  4. Safe Space for Dialogue: Engage in a supportive environment where you can bring questions and discuss complex topics openly. This event is designed to be a safe space for all attendees to have meaningful and challenging conversations about race, equity, and belonging.

  5. Listening Sessions: Take part in listening sessions to gain new perspectives and understand the experiences of underrepresented groups in the venture capital ecosystem. These sessions will provide valuable insights to inform your investment practices.

  6. Networking and Collaboration: Connect with other forward-thinking venture capitalists and experts in the field. Build a supportive network to share challenges, successes, and ongoing learnings.

About Your Facilitator:

Hadiyah Mujhid is the CEO and founder of HBCUvc, an organization that is reshaping venture capital to be inclusive and equitable. Under Hadiyah's leadership, HBCUvc has become the largest paid venture capital fellowship for rising Black talent and historically excluded early professionals. Hadiyah's dedication has played a pivotal role in shaping the career paths and professional growth of over 300 rising investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators. She has also co-authored the book "Black Founders at Work: Journeys To Innovation," where she brings underrepresented voices to the forefront and offers a fresh blueprint for inclusive entrepreneurship. 

Hadiyah's career spans over two decades, with experience as a social impact entrepreneur, technical founder, software engineer, and angel investor. She advocates using technology, entrepreneurship, and equitable investments to combat economic inequality. Her insights and expertise have earned widespread acclaim and are featured in publications such as Forbes, Blavity, TechCrunch, Business Insider, Black Enterprise, and Handelsblatt. Recognized as a 2019 Echoing Green Fellow and 2019 Praxis Fellow, she continues to push the boundaries of innovation and social impact. She earned an MBA from Drexel University and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, an HBCU. Hadiyah remains unwavering in her mission to drive equitable innovation, transform venture capital, and shape the future of social impact investing for generations to come.
